The less we handle fruit and vegetables prior to sale, the greater the chance that their quality is maintained. Growers and suppliers are able to pack produce directly into Reusable Transport Packaging (RTPs) in the field or packing room; retailers are able to display produce directly in RTPs following receipt from distribution centres. Many supermarkets follow this model with great sales success
Greater ventilation ensures faster cooling and ripening
RTPs are designed specifically for their intended use. They have the right balance of ventilation and solid walls to enable fast cooling of fresh produce after harvest and effective temperature retention during the journey in the supply chain. RTPs also offer a greater level of protection due to their rigid structure.
